Our Main Stage is sponsored by The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of Rohan, the Christmas blockbuster with a theatrical release on December 13. The animated film Lord of the Rings: The Battle of Rohan returns to the epic world brought to life in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, based on the beloved books by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The plot takes place 183 years before the events of the original film trilogy. The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of Rohan tells the fate of Helm Hammarhand, the legendary king of Rohan, and his family. A sudden attack by Wulf, a cunning and ruthless Dunlendning leader seeking revenge for his father’s death, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last-ditch effort to defend themselves in the ancient fortress of Hornborgen—a mighty fortress that would later become famous like Helm’s cleft. As the situation grows increasingly desperate, Héra, Helm’s daughter, must muster the courage to lead the resistance against the deadly enemy bent on their complete destruction.
Helmed by award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (TV series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”), the talented voice ensemble is led by Brian Cox (“Succession”) as Helm Hammarhand, the mighty the king of Rohan; Gaia Wise (“A Walk in the Woods”) as his daughter Héra; and Luke Pasqualino (“Snowpiercer”) as Wulf. Miranda Otto, who gave an unforgettable and award-winning performance in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, returns as Éowyn, Rohan’s Shieldmother, and serves as narrator.
The film is produced by Oscar winner Philippa Boyens, from the screenwriting team behind the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, as well as Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou, who collaborated on the Blade Runner: Black Lotus series in addition to their many separate animation projects. Executive producers are Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson, Sam Register, Ken Kamins, Carolyn Blackwood and Toby Emmerich. Screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews and Phoebe Gittins & Arty Papageorgiou, with story by Addiss & Matthews and Boyens, based on characters created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The team of creative collaborators returning from The Lord of the Rings trilogy also includes Academy Award winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor, along with renowned Tolkien illustrator John Howe. The music is composed by Stephen Gallagher, music editor for Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” trilogy.
